Calendar of Events 2010

    February

  • February 2: Día de la Candelaria or Candlemas is a religious holiday that is celebrated with processions, dancing, bullfights in certain cities, and the blessing of the seeds and candles. The festivities are best seen in: San Juan de los Lagos, Jalapa; Talpa de Allende, Jalisco; and Santa Maria del Tuxla, Oaxaca.
  • February 5: Día de la Constitución an official holiday that commemorates Mexico's Constitution. Celebrated Monday, February 2, 2009.
  • February 7 – 11:  Special Painting Class offering with international oil painter Efren Gonzalas.  Efren will lead this special event from 9:00 a.m. till 3:00 p.m. at the Manzanillo Art Studio (corner of Lazaro Cardenas and Constituuyentes).  Cost is $3,500 pesos, which includes all materials.  Class limit 10 persons.   • February 11 - 16: Carnaval is an official Mexican holiday that kicks off a five-day celebration of the libido before the Catholic lent. Beginning the weekend before Lent, Carnaval is celebrated exuberantly with parades, floats and dancing in the streets. Port towns such as Ensenada, La Paz, Mazatlan and Veracruz are excellent places to watch Carnaval festivities. Dates change slightly as follows: 2008: Jan 31 - Feb 5; 2009: Feb 19-24; 2010: Feb 11-16.
  • February 14: Dia del amor y la amistad – Valentine’s Day is a day everyone can celebrate, because it’s not just for lovers, it is also for friends.
  • February 16 – 20: ENART National Handicraft Exhibition, Tlaquepaque supports the craft of authentic Mexican decorative and gift items.  Advance hotel reservations a must, as the town fills up quickly.
  • February 20: Eugenio Toussaint Jazz Trio, Manzanillo will headline a night of wine and music at St. John’s Colegio Auditorium, sponsored by the Viva Vino Social Club.  The event opens at 6:00 p.m. with wine tastings, tapas, and jazz on the outside patio; with music from the Eugenio Toussaint Jazz Trio at 9:15 p.m. and reception for the Trio at the Viva Vino Social Club at 11:30 p.m.  Reserved seating; cost is $250 -$350 pesos.  Tickets available from Vivo Vino Social Club, Schooner’s Restaurant, Best Western Hotel in Las Brisas, Farmacia Brisas, and Nightingale Medical Supply in El Centro.
  • February 24: Flag Day, This Mexican national holiday honors the Mexican flag.
    February 25: Bellas Artes Del Pacificio presents the St. Petersburg String Quartet at Salon Marbella.  Art Exhibit begins at 7:00 p.m.; concert begins at 8:00 p.m. Contact Information: www.bellasartesdelpacifico.com
  • February 27:  MESE Annual Breakfast, Manzanillo is a fundraiser to help keep kids off the streets and in school. MESE also provides tutoring for kids and some vocational classes for parents and guardians.  The MESE annual breakfast begins at 10:00 am at Hotel El Tesoro (Sierra); tickets are $250 pesos   

 

 

 

    March

  • March 12: Galeria La Manzanilla Artist’s Reception, La Manzanilla will feature Juan Ezcurdia from San Miguel de Allende from 4-8:00 p.m.; The Galeria is located at Calle Perula Sur #83, La Manzanilla.  Information:silvermx@mcn.org
  • March 18: La Expropiación Petrolera, Oil Expropriation of March 18, 1939. Civic holiday.
  • March 19: St. Joseph's Day, Tamulin, San Luis Potosi. is a religious holiday
  • March 21: The Birthday of Benito Juárez, a famous Mexican president and national hero, this is an official Mexican holiday. Celebrated Monday, March 16, 2009.

 

    April

  • Semana Santa: Semana Santa is the holy week that ends the 40-day Lent period. This week includes Good Friday and Easter Sunday. It is Mexican custom to break confetti-filled eggs over the heads of friends and family.
  • April – May: Manzanillo Carnivale, Manzanillo is a colorful local festival known for its mask competitions and parades with musicians and dancers.`

 

 

    May

  • May 1: Primero de Mayo is the Mexican national holiday that is equivalent to the U.S. Labor Day.
  • May 3: Holy Cross Day Día de la Santa Cruz, when construction workers decorate and mount crosses on unfinished buildings, followed by fireworks and picnics at the construction site.
  • May 5: Cinco de Mayo is the Mexican national holiday that honors the Mexican victory over the French army at Puebla de los Angeles in 1862.
  • May 10: Mother's Day, Due to the importance of the mother in Mexican culture, Mother's Day is an especially significant holiday.

 

    June

  • June 1: Navy Day is an official Mexican holiday.
  • June 24: Saint John the Baptist Day is celebrated with religious festivities, fairs, and popular jokes connected to getting dunked in water.
  • June 29: Fiesta of Saint Peter and Saint Paul notable celebrations in Mexcaltitán, Nayarit and Zaachila, Oaxaca.

 

    September

  • September 1: Annual State of the Union, Though this date is an approximation, the President delivers the address in the autumn.
  • September 13: Los Niños Héroes, Heros of the Mexican-American War 1847. The President of Mexico commemorates their sacrifice at a wreath-laying ceremony at the monument to Los Niños Héroes in Chapultepec Park.
  • September 16: Mexican Independence Day celebrates the day that Miguel Hidalgo delivered El Grito de Dolores, and announced the Mexican revolt against Spanish rule.

 

    October

  • October 12: Día de la Raza, This day celebrates Columbus' arrival to the Americas, and the historical origins of the Mexican race.

 

 

    November

  • November 1&2: Día de los Muertos is an important Mexican holiday that merges Pre-Columbian beliefs and modern Catholicism. Europe's All Saints' Day and the Aztec worship of the dead contribute to these two days that honor Mexico's dead.
  • November 20: Mexican Revolution Day,  this official Mexican holiday commemorates the Mexican Revolution of 1910. Celebrated Monday, November 16, 2009.
